The Liberal Party candidate of Victoria, British Columbia, Cheryl Thomas, has resigned after comments she made about Israelis, Mosques, and the ethnicity of Santa Clause were revealed as the final entry in our Nine Days of Scandal series.
I want to take this moment to apologize unreservedly for past comments on social media that have come to light. When looking back at them, I understand that they are offensive and have no place in our political discourse.
As the deadline to nominate candidates to a riding was September 28th, the Liberal Party are unable to replace her. As such, the riding of Victoria will be unrepresented by a Liberal candidate, though her name will remain on the ballot.
The last thing I want to do is distract from the incredible work Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada are undertaking. This election is too important and Canadians deserve better with a new government.
Her disqualifying statements involved comparing mosques to “brainwashing stations” and saying that “Santa has to be white.”
